AI for Merchant & Payments Intelligence

Merchant businesses in the Gulf are growing on the back of e-commerce, SME digitization and national payment schemes, and the acquirers, payment service providers and banks that serve them compete on how well they understand each merchant. Eurisko builds the merchant and payments intelligence use cases behind that understanding: a unified merchant view with smart segmentation, churn and growth signals, authorization decline intelligence and smart retries, peer benchmarking, onboarding document extraction and a merchant risk early-warning monitor, across the GCC, the wider Middle East and Lebanon.

Each use case turns transaction, acceptance and dispute data you already hold into a decision a relationship manager, a risk analyst or a product owner can act on, with the drivers shown alongside the recommendation.

Overview

Know every merchant like your best relationship manager does.

A merchant portfolio is a long tail: a few hundred accounts your team knows personally and tens of thousands it only sees through tickets. Acceptance rates drift, volumes migrate to a competitor, refunds and disputes creep up, and the signal is in the data weeks before it reaches a person.

Merchant intelligence turns that data into a living profile for each account: the KPIs that matter, the segment it belongs to, the growth opportunities its peers have taken, the churn risk and the value at stake, and the risk indicators a monitoring team would want to see first. Generated profiles make each segment legible to sales and relationship teams without a data analyst in the room.

Eurisko builds this layer on the acquiring, gateway and core systems already in production in the region and delivers it inside the portals and CRM tools your teams use, with a merchant-facing view where it adds value.

Use cases

Eight merchant and payments use cases, from onboarding to retention.

Each one is proven on a masked extract of merchant, transaction and dispute data and shipped into the portals and workflows your merchant teams use.

Merchant 360 & smart segmentation

Creates a unified view of each merchant, derives meaningful business KPIs and groups similar merchants by behaviour and needs, with generated profiles that make every segment understandable to sales and relationship teams.

Merchant churn & retention

Detects declining volume, acceptance quality, support sentiment or product use, estimates churn risk and prioritizes merchants by both risk and the value at stake, with a recommended retention play.

Merchant growth opportunity finder

Compares a merchant with relevant peers, identifies performance gaps and translates them into prioritized growth plays: acceptance features, operating hours, offer participation or new customer segments.

Authorization decline intelligence & recovery

Analyzes authorization logs to separate hard declines from recoverable ones, identifies the drivers by merchant, channel and segment and recommends practical actions for each stakeholder, without touching live authorization logic.

Smart retry for online payments

Learns which failed online payments are likely to recover, the best retry window and when further attempts should stop, simulating recovery against historical outcomes and policy limits.

Merchant benchmarking & peer insights

Builds privacy-safe peer cohorts and benchmarks growth, ticket size, frequency, acceptance and dispute performance, with minimum group sizes enforced so no merchant can be singled out.

Merchant onboarding document extraction

Classifies commercial registrations, licences, identity documents and bank letters, extracts key business and ownership fields and compares them with the application, producing a structured profile and a reviewer checklist.

Merchant risk & early-warning monitor

Learns each merchant’s baseline and peer norms, then detects shifts in volume, ticket size, refunds, disputes, declines and settlements, with explainable alerts and an investigation view.

How it works

One merchant data foundation, many decisions.

All eight use cases draw on one merchant feature store: transaction volume and count, ticket size, acceptance and decline codes, refunds and disputes, settlement timing, product usage and support interactions, normalized across acquiring, gateway and core systems. From there, clustering builds segments, forecasting and change detection flag churn and risk, driver analysis explains declines, and constrained optimization schedules retries.

Every output is paired with its drivers and a peer comparison, because a relationship manager will not call a merchant about a score. Recommendations are phrased as actions with an estimated value, and monitoring alerts open directly into an investigation view with the timeline that triggered them.

Onboarding automation uses the same document intelligence we deploy for KYC: classification, OCR and cross-document validation with every extracted field traceable to its source, returning a reviewer checklist rather than an automated approval.

GCC, Middle East & Lebanon

Built for the region’s payment schemes and merchant documents.

Merchant acquiring in the Gulf runs on national schemes and instant-payment rails alongside the international networks, with SME programmes, e-commerce licensing and PCI DSS obligations shaping how merchants are onboarded and monitored. Our models read the response codes, settlement cycles and dispute flows of these schemes, and benchmark merchants against peers in the same city, sector and size band.

Onboarding documents are regional too: commercial registrations, trade licences, establishment cards, national and residency identity documents and bank letters, in Arabic, English or both. Our extraction models are trained on these document types and validated against the application form, so reviewers start from a checklist rather than a scan. In Lebanon, where cash and card economies coexist, the same signals are tuned to multi-currency acceptance and settlement patterns.

How we work

A process built on evidence.

Discovery & success metrics

A workshop with the business owner, the data owner and the technology lead fixes the decision to improve and the number that proves it.

Data readiness

We profile the sample, masked or synthetic, and say plainly what it can and cannot support before anything is built.

Prototype

Model, prompt, retrieval or optimization logic plus a working demo your team can click through, not a slide.

Evaluate & play back

Accuracy, groundedness, fairness and cost are measured against an agreed test set and reported with their limitations.

Productionize

Integration, security review, MLOps and monitoring inside your perimeter, scoped only once the evidence supports it.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Can decline intelligence change our authorization logic?

It does not touch it. The use case analyses historical authorization outcomes to show which declines are recoverable and why, and recommends actions for merchants, your operations team and, where relevant, issuers. Any change to live logic stays with your payments team.

How do you benchmark merchants without exposing competitors’ data?

Peer cohorts are built on industry, geography and size with minimum group sizes enforced, so a merchant sees percentiles and gaps against a cohort, never another merchant’s figures. Cohort quality and privacy thresholds are reported as part of the evaluation.

What systems do you integrate with?

Acquiring platforms, payment gateways, core banking and CRM systems already in production in the region, through APIs and secure data extracts. For a first prototype a masked extract of merchant, transaction and dispute data is enough.

Is this relevant for a bank that is not an acquirer?

Yes. Banks serving SME and corporate clients use the same merchant view for relationship management, lending signals and cross-sell, and the onboarding automation applies to any business-customer onboarding.

Does our data have to leave the country or our data centre?

No. For banks, telecoms and government entities in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Oman and Lebanon we deploy inside your private cloud or on-premises, use open-weight models when data cannot leave the perimeter, and start with masked or synthetic samples so no customer record is needed to prove the idea.

Where do we start if we want more than one use case?

Pick a small portfolio rather than isolated ideas: one quick win, one strategic differentiator and one operational efficiency case, ideally sharing one data foundation and one evaluation framework. We run a short selection workshop with your business, data and technology leads to shortlist by value and data readiness.
